The United Nations declared 2010 to be the International Year of Biodiversity.

Declines in the numbers of animals such as panda, whales, tigers (and many more) are shocking and brought up the problem of species at risk on the table to be discuss. Some species have been disappearing at up to 1000 times the natural rate and the future doesn’t look bright too. Based on The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species an estimated 34,000 plant and 5,200 animal species face extinction.

It’s a variety of threats that effect our biodiversity. Habitat loss (fragmentation, degradation), over-exploitation, climate change and pollution to mention a few.

Loss of species has been always a natural phenomenon, but in recent years the speed of extinction has accelerated dramatically as a result of human activity.

This infographic is a look at The 10 Threatened Species (no particular choice) and -probably- it’s a outlook of thousands more.
